Career summary

Robert McCormack is a senior commercial lawyer with extensive experience in banking and finance, acting for both bankers and borrower customers. His legal training focused on acting for leading financial institutions in commercial lending transactions. This was followed by higher experience in the United Kingdom, where he acted in more sophisticated merchant and investment banking transactions for iconic banking houses in London under the tutelage of a leading firm of lawyers in the West End.

Robert’s banking and finance experience includes cross-border borrowing transactions for international operating clients with an Australian nexus, in the USA, Germany, UK and Canada. He also has experience in acting for major clients as customers/borrowers from all of the major Australian banks and financial institutions. Robert has advised on commercial transactions ranging from complex syndicated financial facilities for clients in the irrigation cotton industry and other agriculture enterprises, to major clients in the retail business sector operating nationally and internationally.

Robert’s participation in syndicated financing transactions provided valuable experience in acting for major companies, as borrowers, in the financial markets in complex financing structures. Additionally, Robert’s reputation as an entertainment lawyer is unparalleled in Australia. Robert combines business acumen with artistic experience in practising law in the entertainment industry, advising clients on legal requirements for the presentation and funding of major theatrical productions.

  • Acting for a subsidiary of a major UK banking house (which subsequently became Macquarie Bank) Acting for the Investment Division of NRMA/NRMA Insurance Limited (Now the IAG Group) and advising them on new and innovative investment products
  • Acting in high calibre commercial investment transactions, including participating in the financing of the Sydney Entertainment Centre and a number of other major city developments
  • Acting as a legal adviser, in respect of financing structures for multi-million dollar productions of internationally successful shows such as “Cats” and “Phantom of The Opera”, “Les Miserables”, “Miss Saigon”, “Rent”, “42nd Street”, “The King & I”, “Mama Mia!”, “Disney’s The Lion King” and “La Boheme” on Broadway.

He has more recently been engaged in a number of productions including “Wicked”, “Jersey Boys”, “Mary Poppins”, “Driving Miss Daisy”, “Legally Blonde”, “Dr Zhivago”, “An Officer and a Gentleman”, “The Rocky Horror Show”, “Walking with Dinosaurs” and “King Kong” and is now working on a revival of Cameron Mackintosh’s “Les Miserables” and “Matilda – the Musical”, Professional details
